From the Paleolithic Era through to the Roman Empire, despite numerous battles, the region continued to developp.
Just one example : in 1154, Poitou and Aquitaine came under English domination through the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine, previously Queen of the Kingdom of France, with Henri Plantagenêt, King of England, only to once again become French, shortly thereafter!
